On the horizon sits a mirage, a shimmering mosaic vault of reflected light, a 10x10x10ft hollow cube made of 125 panels of two-way mirror. During the daytime, it is a sparkling jewel, beckoning you to gaze at the mountains, the playa and your own refracted reflection. As you admire your reflected world, you discover a hidden door camouflaged in the vault’s surface. Upon entering the mirrored cube, you realize that the walls are almost transparent! Out of curiosity, and while remaining unseen, you find yourself observing the observers on the outside of the cube….in a most voyeuristic way. When the sun fades from the horizon, a transformation occurs: as you enter the dark shimmering cube, in an instant you are surrounded by your own mirrored image on five sides, reflecting infinitely, glittering in the starlight of a giant mirrored ball suspended from the ceiling. The walls appear to you, the Observer, as solid mirror and metal; your world is intimate with the illusion of vastness…. Observed from the outside, in the dark desert night, you see a person silhouetted inside a mosaic vault of translucent glass surrounded by swirling stars.
My first large sculpture, funded and created for the Burning Man 2004 theme: Beyond Belief.
